If there's a new trend in the beauty market, you can be sure that Essence and Catrice will join it and create a collection of products that will be accessible to most of the people at most affordable prices. One of those trends is liquid lipsticks. I don’t remember exactly when those became so popular, but I bought my first one at the beginning of this year, and it was Deborah Milano Red Laque product. The most popular in Slovenia were L’Oreal L’Extraordinaire liquid lipsticks, but I decided to skip those because they weren’t so cheap and I wear matte products more often than glossy ones. The trend continued Bourjois with the release of La Laque collection, which also isn’t the cheapest collection. And then Catrice and Essence released products that anyone can afford, and are perfect for people on a budget. I had to test liquid lipsticks from both brands, of course, and since they are quite different I decided to review them together.
Before I start with the review I want to talk about the definition of liquid lipstick. Liquid lipstick is a hybrid between a lipstick and a lipgloss. It’s glossier than regular lipstick, while on the other hand gives more colour to the lips than gloss and it also lasts longer. Usually it’s applied with applicator, fingers or from a squeeze tube. This is the definition I found here. But for most of the people these are just better pigmented lipglosses.

03 Meet You at the Bar-bie and 050 What-A-Melon
In the stores these are sold under a wrong name. These definitely shouldn’t be called lipsticks, but just simply lipglosses. By the definition written on Catrice page these should be hybrids, which unite a pure colour of a lipstick with the maximum shine of a gloss, but unfortunately I can’t say that the first characteristic is significant for Catrice products.
They released 12 quite regular shades in this collection – nudes, reds, pinks. The packaging is simple, a plastic square tube with a black lid and transparent lower part that has the name of the brand on. These have a doe foot application that actually seems a bit clumsy to me. Because the spongy part is very flexible and it moves every time I touch my lips I always have a feeling that it’ll fall off.
The formula of these glosses is sheer, but again for a lipgloss these are good pigmented. They feel very light and hydrating on the lips. As is usual for Catrice these have nice sweet vanilla scent, which isn’t too strong, and their formula is not sticky. They glide nicely on lips, but the duration time is not the best. The glossiness disappears in less than an hour and soon after the rest of the product. What-A-Melon actually lasts a bit longer on my lips than Meet You at the Bar-bie.
What-A-Melonis a bright pinkish red shade, but it looks a bit darker when it’s applied on my lips, because my natural colour is seen through, except if I apply two coats of it. Meet You at the Bar-bie is a pinkish nude shade that’s a bit sheerer than What-A-Melon and it gives s subtle colour to my lips. I think this shade will love people who don’t like bright colours on lips and want to give them only a hint of colour. Since it’s a nude shade it fades away even faster, but I like to use it on a daily basis, when I don’t wear makeup, because it’s not too noticeable.
I’m a bit disappointed with these products, because I expected ... more. I really hoped that these would be more similar to Bourjois La Laque products and less to regular glosses. I won’t say that they are bad products, because they aren’t. If you’re a fan of lipglosses you’re probably going to love them. I like to use Meet You at the Bar-bie when I don’t wear makeup, because it gives my lips subtle colour and moisturizing, but I probably wouldn’t repurchase these. 030 Almost Real and 040 Show Off!
While Cosnova had no clue what it was doing when it produced liquid lipstick for Catrice (if we consider the description and compare it to actual product), they made a re-examination by Essence and create something that looks closer to liquid lipstick. Of course there’s a lack of longevity, because both shades fade away quite fast, but other qualities are quite close to liquid lipsticks – a great shine, nice pigmentation, packaging with applicator. The definition of Essence liquid lipsticks is practically the same as of Catrice ones – a hybrid with a colour payoff of a lipstick and glossiness of a lipgloss.
Essence released 6 shades in this collection, and because I wasn’t really impressed with Catrice fluid “lipsticks” I took only two shades: 03 Almost Real and 04 Show Off! Now I really regret that I didn’t take all of them, because I really like these two. The packaging is a plastic square tube with the lid in the colour of particular shade. It’s smaller than Catrice packaging and it looks less fancy, but I like it better. Essence glosses also have a doe foot application, which is a bit bigger than Catrice one and I also like it better, because it’s not so clumsy.
The formula of Essence glosses is very creamy and the colour payoff is amazing, because these cover up my lips with first coat already. With second coats these cover them completely, without my natural lip colour being seen through, and they do look like a very glossy lipstick on my lips. They apply easily and feel moisturizing, while their formula is non-sticky and it smells amazing. Their longevity is also not very amazing, because even the red shade Show Off! - bright shades usually last longer than nude shades –, fades away in two hours. But the surprising thing I noticed by this shade is that when it fades away it leaves an even, very light pink stain on the lips. When I eat, the glossiness and most of the colour fade away, but this light stain stays anyway. I didn’t notice that Almost Real would stain my lips; when this shade fades away it fades completely.
Show Off! is a bright red shade, while Almost Real is a nude brown shade. I like both shades a lot, and I’m a girl who adores matte lip products. I think that girls that adore lipglosses are going to love Essence collection because of their amazing colour payoff. These contain 4 ml and cost 2,79 €. I compared Essence Show Off to Catrice What-A-Melon side by side on lips to show you the pigmentation of each. I think it’s quite noticeable that Catrice glosses are sheerer.
I also had to compare red Essence gloss to Bourjois La Lacque shades. Although Bourjois have a bit better colour payoff and are much more hydrating, I think Essence glosses are quite an amazing variation for Bourjois glosses, especially for few times lower price.
So, here’s a summary of my review and a conclusion:
- Catrice released 12 shades in the collection, while Essence released 6 shades.
- Both brands have plastic square packaging. Catrice packaging looks fancier with black lid and transparent lower part, but I prefer Essence one because it’s completely in the colour of particular shade. Also, Essence products have sturdier applicator.
- Essence glosses have creamier and better pigmented formula.
- Catrice glosses are glossier, but that's understandable, since these are ordinary glosses.
- Both feel moisturizing on lips, smell sweet and are easy to apply.
- None of these glosses is very long lasting, but Essence glosses last about an hour longer than Catrice ones. Also, a shade Show Off! leaves a gentle stain on my lips.
- Catrice glosses contain 5 ml (4,29 €), while Essence glosses contain 4 ml (2,79 €).

- I personally prefer Essence collection and I’m considering purchasing other four shades, although I’m still not completely sure, because I still prefer wearing matte lips products. On the other hand Catrice glosses were disappointment for me, because I expected they won’t be so sheer, but I think that people who are fan of glosses or those who like to wear subtle colours on lips will love them.
