I recently bought a voucher to go for high tea in Annandale, at a place called The Cafe Sienna, and went with my sister-in-law, Mrs MC. I thought it would be a nice spot to relax and watch the world go by, having been there in the past when it was still called Esther's Table, which was lovely, and they did a decent high tea. Sadly, I was mistaken. Here's how it went.
Firstly, the girl who was serving us and showed us to our table looked a little harassed and swept off her feet. It didn't seem to be crazy busy, but to be hair, who knew what it was like behind the scenes.
Inside, the decor had changed a little, with some pictures on the wall, but the counter looked the same, and the setup within was similar to what it was like before. They already had a spot set aside for us, so we took our seats and waited for our meals. We had two little tattered pieces of paper on the table listing the teas they had and I picked my usual chamomile with a side of honey.
The teas arrived and things looked promising, but while the honey did turn up in a little jug, it appeared that they forgot it was meant to be honey, had poured a bit of milk into it, then topped it up with honey once they realised their mistake. Not a huge deal, but certainly a little... lazy, I guess, not getting a new jug for the honey.
I liked the first meal consisting of a savoury pancake with avocado and bacon - easy to eat and quite tasty.
The three tier stand that arrived turned out to be wobbly, so things listed to the side a little, but that was ok.
The sweets were made up of chocolate cake and an orange muffin sliced into two.
The sandwiches were cream cheese and cucumber, as well as mustard and bacon bits, an interesting combination that worked quite well for me, as I love salt. However, you could see quite distinct fingerprints in the sandwiches, and that wasn't the best look.
The scones weren't anything special, and they were quite big and the jam was a little bland.
I found the whole experience ok at best, and it was all a little disappointing, from the finger sandwiches with actual fingerprints (gave us a whole new spin on the phrase finger sandwiches) and the one long strand of curly hair that found in my food. Yup - you read that right.
Overall, I would rate this:
