I began today by going on CBC Radio and heartily recommending Animal Kingdom as my DVD "Hidden Gem" of the week... and I ended it by recording next week's episode of DVD Afternoon with Heather Noel, during which I spend most of my time agreeing with Heather that the movie is kind of a disappointment. Now I guess I'll spend the night lying awake and wondering when I turned into such a wishy-washy flip-flopper. Hopefully I'll eventually realize that Animal Kingdom is just a movie that doesn't quite live up to the critical hype, but which still has strong enough performances and a distinctive enough atmosphere for it to still be worth recommending. Then I can fall asleep... and have nightmares of Jacki Weaver's Animal Kingdom character, a Melbourne criminal matriarch named "Grandma Smurf," chasing after me.
