Miller teaches the reader:
- Simple ways to be intentional about rest
- Ideas for tuning out distractions and tuning in to God
- How means and other times with friends and family can be rejuvenating Sabbath experiences
Intertwined with some excellent stopping to listen for God's voice and direction in our lives, Miller weaves the person story of her own family's experience of following God's direction to uproot their lives in American and move to London, England. She recounts how "God imposed" seasons of rest, when we may feel that prayers are unanswered, are in fact really seasons when God is working "behind the scenes" to ensure that things fall perfectly into place. Although my Sabbath includes making worshiping at church with fellow believers, author Miller did not necessarily make that a priority in her Sabbath observance and it disappointed me that she did not write about the importance of gathering with others to pray, praise and worship. Nevertheless, this books has some great thoughts and ideas for more meaningful Sabbath experiences.
As the author explains," When we see time as a generous gift of invitation instead of something we hoard selfishly, we are more generous with the hours given us and free form the tyranny of the urgent. In 'giving away' twenty-four hours to rest and pay attention, he seems to bless what is initially considered a sacrifice, in the same way he blesses finances in tithing. When I give time away to God first, I have the capacity to give myself and resources away to others joyfully. I realize time spent for the sake of someone else isn't time wasted at all. He redeems what I often consider a sacrifice."
The book resonated with me and gave me a lot of food for thought. I am glad that I read it. I gave this book 4 stars **** out of a possible 5. Bethany House publishers provided me with a free copy of this book, but the honest opinion and review is mine.
